42. Fruit Tree, Fallow Land, Massacre Farm, near Stantėrg, 2000

The village of Stantėrg, located in northern Kosova, is the center of the great Trepēa mining complex, and therefore was of strategic importance to the Serbs. An Albanian farmer lived here, several miles outside Stantėrg, with his two sons. The three were killed by Serb paramilitaries in 1999, simply because they were Albanian. Because of the isolated situation in which they lived, the bodies were not discovered until some time after the murders: isolated by nature, isolated in death. It is unnerving to walk here.
